Press Release - Royal at Daedalus
13 July 2017
HRH The Princess Royal visited Daedalus today (Thursday 13 July), as the site marks 100 years of flying.
The visit was an opportunity for her Royal Highness to see the latest improvements made there by Fareham Borough Council.
The first stop on the tour was at HM Coastguard's search and rescue helicopter base at Lee-on-the-Solent and technical training centre at Daedalus. The Princess Royal was shown around the new AW189 Coastguard search and rescue helicopters and observed a coastguard rescue team demonstration on a climbing wall.
The Royal party then visited CEMAST College to meet teachers and students and view their workshop and laboratory facilities. Highlights included practical demonstrations in robotic programming, engineering, 3D printing, and a wind tunnel/ flight simulator.
Next, Her Royal Highness visited the Innovation Centre, where she was shown an exhibition highlighting the history of Daedalus and the improvements planned for the area in the future. HRH spent time speaking to staff from various businesses based at the Innovation Centre, and representatives from Oxford Innovation (who run the Centre). A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the Innovation Centre by Her Royal Highness to mark the occasion. Mike Saunders from Her Majesty's Coastguard also received the Volunteer of the Year Award.
Her Royal Highness commented "I hope a lot of you feel that this is something that the pioneers who came here 100 years ago, would be hugely enthralled by what many of you are doing here and to see how sophisticated all of this has become. Thank you for keeping history alive and proving that history always has a future."
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: "It was an honour to welcome The Princess Royal to Daedalus. Her Royal Highness was able to see at first-hand the impressive developments which have taken place there since the Council took ownership in 2015. As Daedalus celebrates its 100th year it is fast becoming a premier site for aviation on the South Coast, so what better way to celebrate than with a Royal visit!"
